Scratch Card Popups with Visisto: A Better Way to Turn a Real Reward into Subscribers

Scratch Card Popups with Visisto: A Better Way to Turn a Real Reward into Subscribers

A scratch card should make a real offer exciting—not disguise a bad deal behind an animation.

A visitor uncovers a prize, sees a clear way to claim it and decides whether to hear from the business again. That can be a memorable interaction. But if the reward is imaginary, the gesture doesn't work on mobile or the email permission is unclear, the popup may earn attention and lose trust.

Visisto has a Scratch Card template in its gamified Popups & forms range. It's designed around a reveal-first, capture-second experience: people discover the reward, then decide whether to claim it with their email. Combined with Contacts and Email campaigns, it can begin a customer relationship rather than end as a novelty game.

Make the reward worth revealing. Make the next email worth receiving.

Build a Scratch Card popup with Visisto.

What makes a scratch card different from an ordinary popup?

A standard popup often asks for an address immediately:

“Join our list for a discount.”

A scratch card introduces an interaction:

“Reveal your welcome offer.”

The reveal can attract curiosity and help the promotion feel more tangible. The challenge is keeping the experience transparent.

Visisto's available Scratch Card template is described in the product catalog as letting visitors scratch to see their reward before signing up, then claim it using their email. That doesn't mean every possible reward probability, coupon-system integration or targeting rule is available without configuration.

The useful comparison is not whether scratching looks more fun. It's whether the experience produces legitimate new Contacts who value the offer and have appropriate permission for the communication that follows.

Choose the right offer before designing the animation

A scratch popup suits a real, clearly defined promotion. It doesn't belong on every page.

Consider three possibilities:

Business Offer What must be true
Homeware store A welcome discount on eligible accessories Actual code works, terms are clear
Beauty brand A seasonal reward on selected products Eligibility and availability are verified
Local workshop A genuine attendee benefit or relevant guide Admission or resource promise can be fulfilled

Don't invent product stock, redemption mechanics or automatic coupon generation. If the actual store can't honour the result, don't use that reward.

For example, saying “You won 20% off!” is misleading if the checkout rejects the code or the headline hides a significant minimum spend.

The value of the reveal depends on the truth of the offer.

Design the complete five-stage experience

A polished scratch popup has five customer moments, not just one animation.

Stage 1: the invitation

A relevant visitor sees:

Headline: Reveal this month's welcome offer.

Supporting line: Check the reward conditions before taking part.

Action: Reveal my offer.

The message explains what's happening without false urgency or guilt.

Stage 2: the reveal

The covering layer is removed or the equivalent supported reveal action is used.

The reveal should be readable on the actual device. It shouldn't require small, precise gestures or hide the close control.

If someone can't swipe or scratch, there should be an appropriate supported alternative to access the information.

Stage 3: the reward

The visitor sees the specific result and essential eligibility terms.

Example: “10% off eligible home accessories. Valid until the published date. Excludes the listed products.”

If rewards vary, allocation and promotional rules must be honest and consistent with the actual configured offer.

Stage 4: the claim

Ask only for necessary information. Explain whether the email address is used for reward fulfilment, ongoing marketing or both—with valid permission choices where appropriate.

Button: Claim the offer.

Don't secretly treat participation as blanket consent for unrelated newsletters.

Stage 5: the next customer message

Fulfil the actual reward. If the visitor separately joined product updates, send a relevant Email campaign afterward.

For example:

Subject: Your homeware reward and one useful care tip.

Only use that subject if the email genuinely contains the reward, the tip and the recipient is appropriate for that message.

The end-to-end customer journey matters more than how quickly somebody swipes.

A complete example: seasonal homeware promotion

Imagine a small homeware retailer preparing a genuine autumn promotion.

Customer goal: Discover an available discount on relevant accessories.

Business goal: Offer a clear promotion and invite interested customers into future product updates.

Target page: A relevant collection page, not a payment screen.

Popup headline: Something useful for your next home update.

Supporting copy: Scratch to discover this season's genuine offer. See eligibility and terms before you claim it.

Reveal result: A verified benefit from the store's actual promotion.

Claim step: Email for fulfilment, with a separate appropriate marketing choice.

Follow-up: The promised reward information and, for eligible opted-in subscribers, occasional home-care guides or collection announcements.

Those are illustrative campaign details, not a deployed Visisto customer's results. Test the actual reward mechanics and connected systems before advertising the popup.

Mobile accessibility is part of the design

Scratch interactions depend on pointing or touch gestures, so accessibility needs more attention than with a plain form.

The W3C's WCAG pointer gestures guidance explains that multipoint or path-based gestures generally need a single-pointer alternative unless the gesture is essential.

Practical checks include:

  • Can somebody access the result without a precise drag path?
  • Is the action possible using supported keyboard controls or an accessible fallback?
  • Can a user zoom without losing the reward or claim button?
  • Does the screen remain usable when the software keyboard opens?
  • Are instructions short and readable?
  • Can the dialog be closed easily?
  • Is the text contrast sufficient?
  • Can the experience be understood without relying only on colour?

If your installed Scratch Card template cannot meet the relevant accessibility needs, use an available simpler capture form rather than forcing an unusable game.

Making a reward more exciting should not make it less accessible.

Protect page speed and the customer's original task

A customer visiting a product description came to learn about that item. If a heavy animation blocks everything before the page loads, the popup can harm the experience.

Test the actual site on a modest phone and a slower connection. Check image sizes, animation performance, scrolling and whether the widget blocks checkout or appointment selection.

Google's intrusive interstitial guidance explains why obstructive dialogs can make main content difficult to access.

Where supported, set an appropriate display rule and ensure a visitor can decline. If a person already participated, avoid repeatedly demanding another entry when account controls allow.

Don't assume every template supports identical timing, frequency or audience segmentation.

What about reward probability and fairness?

If your promotion allows multiple outcomes, make the actual reward rules understandable.

Important questions:

Is every participant guaranteed a benefit?

Do different participants receive different rewards?

Are the outcomes determined fairly by the actual configured mechanics?

Are there inventory, geographic or age-related limitations?

Are required terms available before the participant shares personal information?

Don't advertise arbitrary percentages such as “one in ten wins” unless the allocation mechanism truly supports the claim and the relevant promotional rules permit it.

A simple, genuine fixed reward may be better than pretending to run a complex prize lottery you cannot administer reliably.

Separate fulfilment from newsletter permission

Somebody may want to redeem a reward without signing up for ongoing promotions.

Where required, explain each data purpose and provide an appropriate marketing choice. For UK audiences, the ICO's guidance on electronic mail marketing explains applicable rules and exceptions.

The email address may be needed to deliver a code or verify redemption. That does not by itself establish eligibility for unrelated future campaigns.

When you create a Visisto Email campaign later, select people whose contact and preference information supports receiving it. Test unsubscribe and suppression behaviour.

Prize claim ≠ unrestricted newsletter subscription.

Measure all four stages, not only “scratches”

A scratch popup can have excellent interaction numbers and disappointing genuine audience growth.

Use clear metrics:

Reveal participation rate = completed reveals ÷ eligible widget impressions × 100.

Valid submission rate = nonduplicate, valid forms ÷ eligible impressions × 100.

Eligible marketing opt-in rate = genuine new Contacts eligible for planned marketing ÷ eligible impressions × 100.

Useful follow-up rate = defined subsequent actions ÷ the relevant eligible contacted audience × 100.

Imagine 4,000 eligible impressions, 960 completed reveals, 320 valid submissions and 160 eligible new marketing opt-ins.

That gives:

Metric Calculation Result
Reveal participation 960 ÷ 4,000 24%
Valid submissions 320 ÷ 4,000 8%
Qualified opt-ins 160 ÷ 4,000 4%

These are fabricated values used to explain definitions, not actual Visisto results or a market benchmark. Claiming “24% email conversion” would be misleading in this example.

Clearly distinguish impressions, sessions and unique visitors using the available reporting definitions.

Scratch card versus a standard signup popup

A fair test might compare:

Version A: A normal popup advertising the genuine welcome offer.

Version B: A scratch reveal of the same offer.

Use comparable audiences, time windows, page context and permission wording. Keep the reward economics aligned as closely as practical.

Where the supported experiment tool permits, randomise visitor assignment and keep it consistent. If you're merely comparing last week with this week, describe the result as observational.

Compare legitimate opt-ins, reward redemption, unsubscribes, customer experience and later meaningful actions, not only which format gets more clicks.

A more elaborate widget isn't inherently more successful.

Your Visisto rollout checklist

1. Verify the Scratch Card template. Confirm availability and required controls in your account.

2. Define the actual reward. Verify source inventory, terms and redemption.

3. Choose a relevant page. Avoid blocking the checkout or another critical task.

4. Write plain-language copy. Explain what participation does and does not mean.

5. Verify claim collection. Check which contact fields and choices are stored.

6. Test mobile and accessibility. Include alternative interaction paths where necessary.

7. Test reward fulfilment. Confirm the customer can use the result.

8. Test permission and suppression. A participant who declines marketing should not silently become a subscriber.

9. Verify reporting. Understand impressions, reveals, submissions and eligible Contacts.

10. Publish carefully. Monitor real visitor experience and retire expired promotions promptly.

If a step fails, fix it before inviting more traffic.

How to turn a successful reward into useful email marketing

Use the direct Visisto path:

Scratch Card popup → Contact → eligible Email campaign → Results.

A customer who chose collection updates could later receive:

Subject: Three details worth checking in the new collection.

Message: Here's how the materials compare and what to consider before buying.

CTA: Explore the collection.

A supported Automation can help send a repeatable message when the event and recipient eligibility are verified. It shouldn't become a prerequisite for building the popup.

The business gets more value from a relevant customer relationship than from endlessly repeating prize popups to the same visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Does Visisto actually have a scratch-card widget?

The current template catalog includes the Scratch Card format. Verify the selected template's deployment status and settings in your account.

Does every participant need to subscribe to marketing?

Don't assume so. Participation and permission to receive later promotional email have different purposes and may require separate choices.

Can the scratch card generate unique discount codes automatically?

Verify the specific supported redemption and commerce integration before claiming that capability.

Are scratch cards better than spin wheels?

Not universally. Choose based on visitor intent, usability, real reward fulfilment and qualified opt-in data.

What if the gesture is difficult on a phone?

Provide a supported accessible reveal alternative or choose a simpler popup. The customer shouldn't lose access to the reward because they can't perform a particular gesture.

Give visitors a real reason to participate

A memorable animation can earn a few seconds of attention. An honest reward and useful follow-up can earn a relationship.

Visisto gives you a Scratch Card capture format, Contacts and Email campaigns in the same product. Build the whole experience—not just the reveal.
